Can We Help President Barack Obama Fulfill The Nobel Peace Prize Aspiraitons?
Congratulations to President Barack Obama, the fourth US president to receive a Nobel Peace Prize. He is being honored for his aspirations and current direction to find long term peaceful solutions to tensions in major world hot spots and well as develop constructive policies for reducing future tensions.
President Barack Obama’s award is designed to send a message to the rest of the national leaders and people of the world that the direction he is on is welcomed as an “aspirational Nobel Prize” which is clearly designed to promote a cause with very positive international implications. So, this kind of honor is a sign of hope, good faith and trust in the intentions of President Obama.
The other two other sitting presidents who are been awarded a Nobel peace prize for actual achievements are:
Theodore Roosevelt won the prize in 1906 for his role in ending the Russo-Japanese war. President Roosevelt was followed by Woodrow Wilson who was awarded the prestigious award in 1919 for his visionary founding the League of Nations, and then helping establish the framework for the post-World War I peace. The League of Nations was a precursor to forming the United Nations decades later.
President Jimmy Carter Jr. was given the honor of the Nobel Peace prize in 2002 almost a quarter of a century after he was instrumental in brokering the 1978 Camp David accord between Israel and Egypt.
Peace is really in the hands of all of us. It is a grass roots process cultivated person to person, house by house, village and town by village and town, and so on up to national and international levels. Leaders like our President Obama provide a major vision and take concrete action in formal relations between nations. Creating an atmosphere of hope, promise and thoughtful vision is important in inspiring like action on the part of other leaders. Positive steps give us all a sense of progress rather than falling back into defenisve actions, fear and national negativity.
In the words of H. H. The Dalai Lama, who won the Nobel Prize twenty years ago in 1989, he says…”Responsibility does not only lie with the leaders of our countries or with those who have been appointed or elected to do a particular job. It lies with each of us individually. Peace, for example, starts within each one of us. When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us.”
What can you and I do to create peace in the world? Certainly there are many actions one can take, but some of the most powerful from a spiritual stand point are to begin with our own motivations, daily intentions and inner life. If we cultivate loving-kindness, compassion, wisdom, intelligent actions and serenity of mind and heart this will go along way to promote world peace.
I also urge people to take time for daily prayer, meditation and inspirational reading from whatever spiritual or religious tradition you are affiliated with.
Even small actions like placing Prayers Flags around your home, office, retreat center, yoga or meditation center is helpful. Prayer Flags have aspirations for peace, compassion, prosperity and goodwill on them.
Say the GreatInvocation daily as do millions of people around the world. The Great Invocation was created over 60 years ago to draw humanity closer to peace, healing and a new era of living more deliberately by fulfilling the Plan of God for a better world. This is a prayer for peace on Earth.
Reciting the Om Mani Padme Hum prayer or chant creates and immediate sense of serenity, calmness while awakening joy. We live more fully in a state of peace when these qualities rule our mind and emotional world. We offer copies of this beautiful Om Mani Padme Hum chant, aka, Love and Compassion mantra here at FourGates.com.
Each day is a precious opportunity to celebrate life, and work for continued peace. Everyone is part of the process. Our congratulations go out to President Barack Obama, and gratitude to the Nobel committee for continuing to acknowledge constructive actions taken by world leaders on behalf of the cause of peace, prosperity and great human dignity.
To Your Peace and Happiness,
Christopher Lee May
