To learn more about The Dalai Lama, click here for more details. His Holiness, a recipient of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, is one of the most well known Tibetan Buddhist teachers in the world today. His warmth, kindness, compassion, pracitcal daily wisdom and friendly nature are a magnet to all peace loving people in the world.
The Dalai Lama received the Nobel Peace prize because of his consistent efforts to resolve the matter of the forceful invasion of Tibet in 1959 by the Chinese through discussion and continued public appeals to governments all over the world rather than support violent resistance to the occupation of Tibet. Millions of Tibetans have been forced into exhile in Nepal, India and all around the world since the invasion 50 years ago. It is estimated that approximately 2 million Tibetans were killed in Tibet either during the initial invasion, or the that years followed between 1959 and today. His Holiness, The Tibetan people and all peace loving people continue to work for, and pray for a peaceful co-existence of the Chinese Government, and the Tibetan people. We earrnestly intend to see a co-existence which will allow for The Tibetans to practice their peacful religion openly and express their unique culture .
One of my dear Tibetan teachers, The Venerable Garchen Rinpoche, spent 20 years in a Tibetan prision for simply being a lama or holy person.
