What is The Aura?

What is The Aura?

People are often confused by not knowing their own body, energy field and deeper self. What could be more natural than to want to cultivate a growing knowledge of our bodies, emotions and mind? Your aura is the rich energy field you create as the result of your thougths, deeds and emotional interactions. This energy field is the affirmation of the quality of life you are living.

The aura is a layered energy field which surrounds and inter-penetrates our physical, emotional and mental bodies. The aura is generally egg-shaped and is natural to the astral or emotional body as well. The predominent color of the aura depends upon the quality and kind of daily thoughts, emotions and physical activities, including to some extent what foods you eat.

The most commonlly seen aura is a “narrow aura”, that field of energy which emanates from the entire body, extending outward approximately two or three inches. Depending upon the degree of refinement of the consciousness and spirituality, it begins to expand from the upper nerve centers. Beginning at the solar plexus in the region of the naval the aura rises toward the physical brain centers, forming the so-called “solar aura” similar to the halo of the Sun. Influxes of blood through the body are characteristic of the transposition of the physical energy of the aura, when the current of tension shifts its pressure due to your thinking, emotional reactions or responses and physical activity.

Many qualities are inherent in the aura. They are measured not only according to the size of the aura, but also by what Master Morya calls “inner tension” or spiritual striving. When there is a highly tensed aura, as with a committed disciple who serves humanity, lamas with great Bodhichitta (enlightened heart like that of a loving, compassionate warrior), then the aura is likened to a shield and the most potent influence on its surroundings or environment. When a person is living a life of compassion, wisdom, kindness, service, striving towards enlightened living, the radiations are brighter, richer and fiery. You always know such a person by the life they are living.

If you think of your aura as the “psychic defense of the spirit” then this is an accurate way to perceive it. If you want physical health, then generate positive qualities in the mind, emotions and eat living foods. If you want overall health and a radiant aura, do the same. Health runs in a spectrum through our entire series of bodies, that is to say what effects on part of our nature also impacts all aspects of our nature.

The aura is the sum total of how one lives life. A fiery and strong aura is the reflection of right living, right thinking, right aspiration, right livelihood, and commitment to a path of some kind of service. The intensified aura heals all wounds both physical and subtle. When the aura radiates love and blessings unconditionally to all people and all beings, there is greater tension and outflow. Even the most casual person can feel the expanding tension of the aura of a loving person who is striving to improve life for others.

Any person who wishes to strengthen their connection with their Higher Self, or God, or Enlightened mind can do so through communion with the Higher World, meaning the higher mind. By cultivating mentally balanced, enlightened layers of one’s character beyond greed, selfishness, pride, anger, hatred, racism and narrow nationalism the aura grows more vibrant. As egoism falls away and selflessness is kindled so then does the aura expand like the wings of a great eagle. Therefore, cultivate daily communion with the Higher World which will induce a strengthening of radiations from the aura like the life blood of the spirit. The aura needs the nourishment of the quest for positive living, greater sanity and enlightened activity to grow more healthy.

If you want to improve your personal relationships, expand the aura through the power of union with the path of the heart, and communion with the Higher World through meditation, recitation of sacred mantra, reflective thinking, prayer and contemplation or silence in which you listen for the voice of your Soul. To commune with the Higher Worlds ask questions often about the meaning and purpose of your life.

Your character, and inner qualities cultivated in life are what make up the energies in the aura. These energies are your treasure chest that you take with you when departing this life. Spend each day building up the reserves of your aura and guard it as would your life savings, or the Fort Knox of your life.

As Christ said, “What profit you if you gain the whole world but lose your soul?” Similarly, what value is life if you do not build up an inner store house of treasure. Be like the farmer that nutures the crop each day to sell in the market. Your aura is the by product of your life’s work.

Based on the book from the Agni Yoga Series Aum, paragraph 121.
