An Altar or Shrine in Your Home Creates Sacred Space

Written By: Christopher May  No Comment

An altar or shrine in your home creates sacred space from which all of your good qualities, aspirations, visions and constructive karma will acculumate. There are many items to place on the altar or shrine.

One of the most universal items placed on a shrine or altar are flowers. In every spiritual or religious tradition flowers are offered at various times of the year, for all sorts of occasions. Flowers are universal symbols of hope, purity, virtue, devotion and appreciation. Cut flowers only last for a short time, therefore it is wiser to offer silk flowers. It is best to avoid any thing which is dying or decaying on the altar. Cut flowers are dying once they are removed from the host plant. Flowers always create a cheerfull feeling and also add the energy of healing, inspiration and joy to a room.

I offer flowers of gratitude at the feet of all saints, Christ, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for their constant rain of blessings. I make this intention when viewing or placing flowers on the altar, “May a shower flowers cover the Earth with the energy of healing for all beings!”

In our ordinary way of thinking we might ask, “Why is a shrine or altar in the home important?”

I often explain that a altar or shrine is the heart of your home or office. It is the most sacred space in which all of your deepest inner power is symbolically and actually gathered in one place. This sacred place is a positive karmic well from which you draw the water of life to sustain your deepest well-being on the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual dimensions of life. Without a shrine or altar, your home is incomplete. Imagine if you did not have a kitchen to cook in, a bathroom to clean and groom your body or a bedroom to rest yourself at night while you’re sleeping. Equally important is an altar.

In your busy modern life, often times the care, feeding, nurturing and grooming of the soul gets placed on the bottom of the “things to do list”. However, remember the old wise saying, “you are what you think about.” You’ll feel better in a place of safety where thoughts about the higher values, virtues and dreams are encouraged.

Does your soul require regular, daily care?

Of course it does! Thus, we create sacred spaces in which to enrich our lives, and bring wholeness into the picture too. Altars and shrines bring balance, harmony, a place of rest and refreshment into your space. They are literally like a banquet table to feed your connection to the higher worlds.

If you do not have a shrine or altar in your home, I highly encourage you to create one. We have been offering all kinds of altars and shrine supplies for this wonderful and sacred art on our website at www.FourGates.com. Once you have an altar or shrine in your home the entire space within and around your home changes. This takes place because a strong connection is built between you personality and higher nature. A feeling that something special is present in your life is clearly experienced.

If you want to create a more discrete setting for the altar, try a cabinet with doors that close like this version shown here at the right. Sometimes you may want to avoid snoopy people poking around a sacred space since their energy can be invasive. If this is your situation, try a getting shrine with doors.

Placing an altar in your home or office makes a world of difference in how you feel about your space. Try it for several years, and see for yourself how good it feels to have a sacred space in your life. Click on any link from this article to review our altar and shrine accessories.
